Twikini - another cool Twitter app for Windows Phones

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Twikini is yet another Twitter app (amongst numerous available) for Windows Phones, and it’s pretty snappy!  I stumbled upon it over at WM Experts and after trying it out today, I’ll say I’m very impressed.

I’ve been using PockeTwit for quite a while now,  but Twikini could become my new Twitter app of choice!  The app is very fast, and has a full assortment of cool features.  I look forward to running it through it’s paces thoroughly, then I intend on doing a comparison review of Twikini vs. PockeTwit and the other offerings.   After the break, I give a quick-and-dirty first impression.  Here are some of the features:

  • It’s written entirely in native C++ code which makes it blazingly fast.
  • The interface is straightforward, simple and uncluttered.
  • You get a full-screen editor for posting tweets, and there are lots of options (adding a photo, shortening URL, adding GPS coordinates or location…)
  • It’s easy to send & receive direct messages.
  • Along with Twitpic integration for posting photos with your status updates, you can view Twitpics right in the app (without having to open a browser) which is very cool.  Lots of people are tweeting with Twitpics included.
  • There’s Windows Media Player integration, which is interesting.  You can tweet the song you are listening to (does that qualify as TMI?!).
  • Shorten long URL’s with shortening services including Bit.ly, TinyURL and Digg.
  • There is one single CAB file that is compatible with all Windows® Mobile devices - both touch and non-touch.
  • And lots more…

More comments after the break… (more…)

So will we see a Zune phone or what?!

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

There is very little fact to substantiate the rumors that fly about a possible Zune phone, but it’s fun to dream!

Today, someone over at the Office 10 Twitter page posted the following:

“New product launch, that’s all I’m allowed to say.  Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre. :) “

And yesterday, they posted this:

“June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers”

Pure speculation here, but could WM 6.5 simply be a distraction to hold us off until the “piece de resistance” was revealed?  Hmmmmm….!  Granted, a Zune HD is supposed to be in the works, and quite likely will be what the June release is about, but what if……?!!!

TweetCall - update Twitter with your voice, for free (for now)

Monday, April 6th, 2009

TweetCall is a free service that allows you to update Twitter from anywhere by simply calling 1-877-TWEETCALL and speaking into a telephone.

How it works

  1. Dial 1-877-TWEET-CALL
  2. Speak your tweet
  3. Your voice is transcribed and posted to Twitter as text!

Before using TweetCall, you have to log in to associate a PIN number with your account for security purposes.

I added the “free (for now)” part because this reminds me of JOTT, which started out free and became a cost service.  Don’t get me wrong - I like JOTT and still pony up the $3.95/mo to use the service (which I do several times a day).

I just wonder what TweetCall has in mind to generate revenue, because I doubt they’re doing this out of the goodness of their hearts!  :)

Regardless, enjoy this handy free service!

Skyfire updates their browser to include Facebook, Twitter and other Social Networking

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Today Skyfire has released a new version of their browser for Windows Mobile. Skyfire is a mobile browser that gives you the most feature complete way to view the web on your phone as it would look on your desktop PC. This means YouTube, Hulu, Flash 10, Silverlight 2, Quicktime, AJAX, it’s all in there.

This latest release includes Facebook and Twitter integration, making it simple to share the things you view on your phone. The browser now supports widescreen (up to WVGA 800×480) and adapts font size for text so once you zoom in, you can read without horizontal scrolling. Contextual zoom will fit the text to your screen, and a newly improved rendering system makes this already snappy browser even faster.

Also new in this version is the ability to not just listen to audio, but download it to your phone (if the media is freely accessible), and for Windows Media Streaming audio, you can listen to streaming radio in the background while you keep on browsing.

To install over the air, point your phone to http://get.skyfire.com.

PockeTwit - a Windows Mobile app for Twitter with a cool interface

Friday, December 26th, 2008

PocketTwit has been in development for a while now, but I just ran across it. I’ve used several, and can say this one is the coolest so far!

Some noteable features:

  • A unique user interface
  • Works on VGA, QVGA and SmartPhone devices
  • Support for multiple twitter and identi.ca accounts
  • Maps view shows users on a world map and allows searching by region
  • “Conversation View” shows a what this status was in reply to.
  • Uses standard notifications to alert you of new friends statuses or replies
  • URL shortening with is.gd
  • Take photos and send to TwitPic
  • Integrated search.twitter.com
  • Clickable @names, URLs, and #Hashtags
  • Option to check for new version on startup
  • Themes
  • Check out this clip of a quick overview of the application in action.

PocketTwit requires Windows Mobile 6 and a .NET Compact Framework 2.0 or better to run. You can get the latest version here.

    Discuss it here.

Twitter Client for Windows Mobile devices

    Friday, April 11th, 2008

Twobile is a brand-new app, still in beta, designed to be a Twitter client for Windows Mobile devices. The app is small - only 200K - so keeping it always running shouldn’t hog up too much memory. The Twobile app offers many different features, each in a separate tab. You can switch between your friends timeline, your messages, your replies, etc. For active twitters, this may mean a lot of switching needs to be done, but no worse than any other app. However, the layout for viewing tweets does make good use of the screen’s real estate by displaying one-line views of the tweets. You can download the software for free from here.

Note: it’s only for touchscreen devices, so if you have a smartphone (Windows Mobile Standard device), check out Tiny Twitter.
