Could Silverlight solve Windows Mobile’s troubles?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

There is an interesting article over at Channelweb about Windows Mobile and Silverlight.  Here is an excerpt:

Several sources told Channelweb.com this week that they expect Microsoft to make Silverlight 4 the platform for building native applications in Windows Mobile 7 and future generations of Windows Phones.

Such a move wouldn’t be unexpected: Windows Mobile 6.5 is based on the Windows CE 5.2 kernel, which is the same version that powered Windows Mobile 5 when Microsoft launched it in 2004. Microsoft was expected to launch Silverlight For Mobile last year, but that has yet to come to pass. Partners have long clamored for Microsoft to support Silverlight in Windows Mobile because they believe the flexibility this would give them translates into easier application development.

“We need to have .Net available to developers in order to compete more effectively, and Silverlight is the key to taking back the application platform for mobile,” said one source, who requested anonymity.

Skyfire updates their browser to include Facebook, Twitter and other Social Networking

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Today Skyfire has released a new version of their browser for Windows Mobile. Skyfire is a mobile browser that gives you the most feature complete way to view the web on your phone as it would look on your desktop PC. This means YouTube, Hulu, Flash 10, Silverlight 2, Quicktime, AJAX, it’s all in there.

This latest release includes Facebook and Twitter integration, making it simple to share the things you view on your phone. The browser now supports widescreen (up to WVGA 800×480) and adapts font size for text so once you zoom in, you can read without horizontal scrolling. Contextual zoom will fit the text to your screen, and a newly improved rendering system makes this already snappy browser even faster.

Also new in this version is the ability to not just listen to audio, but download it to your phone (if the media is freely accessible), and for Windows Media Streaming audio, you can listen to streaming radio in the background while you keep on browsing.

To install over the air, point your phone to http://get.skyfire.com.

New Windows Mobile App Portal (currently abroad only)

Friday, July 25th, 2008

There’s a new Silverlight-based portal for Windows Mobile applications designed specifically for customers in the EMEA region – that’s “Europe, Middle East, and Africa.” On this site, you can browse line of business applications  by industry or drill down into apps for sales force enablement, field force enablement, GPS, and more. Each app features a description, a scenario for its usage, and its benefits. You can click to see screenshots and to access more links – like the link to the app’s website, for example. For anyone in this geographic region, the site can be a valuable resource to help you find the best business apps for your Windows Mobile device. To take a look for yourself here.

Wonder what the timing is for this to be available in North America…
