Do you enjoy flashing your Windows Phones with updated ROMs?  If so, I’m sure you’ve experienced the need to reinstall all of your applications and setting up the device the way you want it. Ugh!  It’s a time-consuming experience and most of us don’t want to go through the headaches. There are helpful tools out there to lessen the pain and make it much easier to handle.

Some of the ROM developers are using UC, which stands for User Customization.  All of the cellular providers use that tool built into the system to install their customizing software, so why can’t you?  What it does is automatically install some of the applications onto the device when it’s been hard reset.  I have used it in the past, but it had some limitations.  I had to write scripts to copy files where I wanted them put and it wasn’t easy.   I then checked out Sashimi.

FRESH UPDATE 7-21-08: Both the Sprint Touch and Mogul ROMs are now posted for real!

For those of you who might have been too cautious to download and install the “unofficial” ROM updates for the Sprint Touch or Mogul we mentioned a few weeks ago, HTC now has the official ROMs on their site. 

Key enhancements for the Touch:

1. Upgrades the operating system from Windows Mobile® 6.0 Professional  to Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional
2. EV-DO Rev. A functionality for faster download and upload speeds when utilizing data services wherever EV-DO Rev. A coverage is available.
3. Advanced GPS functionality including the Sprint Navigation application.
4. Adds the Opera browser.
5. Adds a full Qwerty on-screen key Qwerty keyboard

Key enhancements for the Mogul:

1. Upgrades the operating system from Windows Mobile® 6.0 Professional  to Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional
2. Adds Sprint TV
3. Includes all enhancements incorporated in previous software upgrades including: 
   • EV-DO Rev. A functionality for faster download and upload speeds when utilizing data services wherever EV-DO Rev. A coverage is available
   • Advanced GPS functionality including the Sprint Navigation application
   • Adds a Task Manager to the Today screen for easier access and management of running programs

Interesting, the Touch gets the Opera browser but the Mogul does not…  curious as to why they did that. 

The Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade is now available for the Samsung i760.  WM 6.1 include enhancements such as an improved version of Internet Explorer, threaded SMS messages, and support for YouTube videos.

Hmmm - I guess Samsung added that nifty YouTube feature - it wasn’t included in the Sprint Mogul/Touch ROM upgrades..!

The official Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM update for Sprint’s Mogul and Touch has been leaked out early.  Yes, this is the official ROM that will soon be available on both HTC and Sprint’s sites.  I have installed the update for my Mogul and it went very smoothly.  I’m going to post details in the forum about the links, how it went and how I restored my data.

I am a Sprint Mogul owner, like a lot of us in the Windows Mobile Louisville group. Ever since I bought the device last September, I’d been hearing that the Mogul had a built-in GPS chip, and was eager to find out if and when it was going to be used.  In November 2007, HTC posted on their website that it really did have a GPS chip, and that we should see a new ROM for the Mogul in Q1 of 2008.

Q1 ends in less than three weeks and we still haven’t seen hide or hair of a ROM from Sprint or HTC.  We have seen an unofficial leaked ROM that enabled the GPS chip and also gave the Mogul Rev A.  Since then, there’ve been lots of rumors of when the real ROM will be released.  This post on PPCGeeks claims that the official ROM (3.35.651.2) will be released on the HTC site on Monday March 10th.  By all appearances, the post looks and sounds very plausible and has a lot of info that seems to make sense to me, so I am sitting here with my fingers crossed hoping it really is true and Monday I will have a Mogul with working GPS and Rev A speeds! - Ian
