Sashimi or UC? Which is best/easier/more complete?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Do you enjoy flashing your Windows Phones with updated ROMs?  If so, I’m sure you’ve experienced the need to reinstall all of your applications and setting up the device the way you want it. Ugh!  It’s a time-consuming experience and most of us don’t want to go through the headaches. There are helpful tools out there to lessen the pain and make it much easier to handle.

Some of the ROM developers are using UC, which stands for User Customization.  All of the cellular providers use that tool built into the system to install their customizing software, so why can’t you?  What it does is automatically install some of the applications onto the device when it’s been hard reset.  I have used it in the past, but it had some limitations.  I had to write scripts to copy files where I wanted them put and it wasn’t easy.   I then checked out Sashimi.

Adobe Flash 10.1 coming to Windows phones

Monday, October 5th, 2009

While Windows phones already support Flash Lite (a less robust version of Adobe Flash Player for mobile devices), it looks like Adobe is pumping more power into the devices.  Windows phones, along with Symbian, Android, and webOS are scheduled to receive the desktop-class version of Flash 10.1.   Windows phones and webOS will get public betas sometime near the end of the year.

Flash 10.1 for smartphones will also make use of GPU acceleration for those who have a smartphone powerful enough to use Flash on their mobile device.  The platform will support the Tegra chipset, Snapdragon, and ION for up to 1080p video content.

Skyfire updates their browser to include Facebook, Twitter and other Social Networking

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Today Skyfire has released a new version of their browser for Windows Mobile. Skyfire is a mobile browser that gives you the most feature complete way to view the web on your phone as it would look on your desktop PC. This means YouTube, Hulu, Flash 10, Silverlight 2, Quicktime, AJAX, it’s all in there.

This latest release includes Facebook and Twitter integration, making it simple to share the things you view on your phone. The browser now supports widescreen (up to WVGA 800×480) and adapts font size for text so once you zoom in, you can read without horizontal scrolling. Contextual zoom will fit the text to your screen, and a newly improved rendering system makes this already snappy browser even faster.

Also new in this version is the ability to not just listen to audio, but download it to your phone (if the media is freely accessible), and for Windows Media Streaming audio, you can listen to streaming radio in the background while you keep on browsing.

To install over the air, point your phone to http://get.skyfire.com.
