Windows Mobile Facebook app updated to address some bugs

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Less than a week after it was officially announced, Microsoft has issued an update to the official Windows Mobile Facebook application. Here’s what’s fixed, according to the Windows Mobile Team blog:

This version should help anyone that was getting the “cannot install due to insufficient privileges” error and it should also help with some hanging errors.

If you’ve been having problems with the app, head over to WindowsMobile.com/facebook and try out the update. When you download it, it’ll be identified as Facebook_v1.0.0.7p (the old one’s just v1.0.0.7.). And here’s another tip when upgrading:

You’ll want to uninstall the old application and then make sure that the facebook.vol and fbmail.vol files are deleted from your root directory before reinstalling.

Official Facebook app for Windows Mobile now available

Friday, May 8th, 2009

This has been posted on every gadget site out there already, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to announce it here as well: Microsoft has released the official version of their Facebook application.  Previously, the unofficial version was available on sites such as xda-developers, but now you can get the real McCoy here.

Some key points about the app:

  • It’s currently the only Facebook app available that uploads video straight from your phone.
  • It integrates with Windows Live, allowing you to share photos, updates, etc. with that service.
  • Works with WM 6 and higher only (sorry WM 5 folks).  The app will come baked in to WM 6.5 which comes out later this year.

Enjoy!

Facebook app from WM 6.5 extracted for use on existing devices!

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Hey you Facebook users! The wonderful folks over at PPC Geeks have been hard at work extracting all sorts of goodies from a Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM, and a Facebook app is the latest booty.

You must install the CAB file to your device (not storage card) for it to work properly, and there are some minor buggy issues, but I just installed it and the app works great. It will work on WVGA, VGA and QVGA devices, including non-touchscreen devices.

Read more about it over at XDA Developers and get the CAB file there.

Skyfire updates their browser to include Facebook, Twitter and other Social Networking

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Today Skyfire has released a new version of their browser for Windows Mobile. Skyfire is a mobile browser that gives you the most feature complete way to view the web on your phone as it would look on your desktop PC. This means YouTube, Hulu, Flash 10, Silverlight 2, Quicktime, AJAX, it’s all in there.

This latest release includes Facebook and Twitter integration, making it simple to share the things you view on your phone. The browser now supports widescreen (up to WVGA 800×480) and adapts font size for text so once you zoom in, you can read without horizontal scrolling. Contextual zoom will fit the text to your screen, and a newly improved rendering system makes this already snappy browser even faster.

Also new in this version is the ability to not just listen to audio, but download it to your phone (if the media is freely accessible), and for Windows Media Streaming audio, you can listen to streaming radio in the background while you keep on browsing.

To install over the air, point your phone to http://get.skyfire.com.

emoze Adds Facebook Messaging to Windows Mobile Phones

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Do you wish you could receive your Facebook messages along with your regular email on your Windows Mobile phone? Now you can with the new version of the emoze mobile push email service. With emoze’s free application, you can read, reply, and send messages directly from your phone’s interface without having to open up and browse to the Facebook web site itself. It’s completely integrated with your phone, all that’s required is a data connection.

Installation is fast and simple, so anyone can do it – not just the technically savvy. Once installed, the emoze Mobile Client application communicates with the Emoze Global Service Network (EGSN) to receive the incoming emails and direct them to the inbox on the mobile device. The app works in the background, but doesn’t slow down the operation of the handset or interfere with other functions, says the company.

Emoze can be downloaded from http://www.emoze.com or downloaded directly onto your Window’s Mobile device by navigating to http://emoze.com

A few months ago, we told you about Snap2Face, a Facebook app designed just for Windows Mobile users. Now, that app is out of beta and the official 1.0 version has been released.

With Snap2Face version 1.0, you can fully interact with Facebook. That means you can view albums, upload photos, update your status, see the statuses of your friends, view and respond to messages, pokes, wall posts, and friend requests. However, what’s really cool about the newest version is its Outlook integration. Snap2Face allows you to import your friends’ profile photos into your Outlook contacts and then use them for caller ID.

Snap2Face is available as a free download on all Windows Mobile 5.0/6.0 devices (both Pocket PC and Smartphone). You can download it here.

FriendMobilizer - Bringing Together Windows Mobile and Facebook

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Macrospecs, Inc. has launched FriendMobilizer, a mobile phone application that gives users full access to their Facebook account. Viewing friends’ info, writing on walls, looking at photo albums, and changing his/her status is a small example of the wide list of the features available to users at their fingertips. Not only does FriendMobilizer run on the majority of Smartphones and Pocket PCs, but the program is completely free and can be downloaded from http://www.FaceOfMobile.com.

Currently FriendMobilizer works on the Windows Mobile operating system, however the generic software platform that was developed for FriendMobilizer will allow porting this application to other operating systems easily. The company is currently working on expanding FriendMobilizer to other social networks, as well.

Facebook App for Windows Mobile

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Windows Mobile users will be happy to know that they finally have their own mobile Facebook app - something Blackberry owners have enjoyed for some time.

The new app is called Snap2Face and it focuses on uploading photos to Facebook on the go as well as letting you view your friend’s albums. That will be useful for WiMo users who want an easy want to upload pictures taken with their phone’s camera, but it’s disappointing that you can’t use the app to see status info, pokes, or anything else. Hopefully, the developers will add these features in the future (fingers crossed!).

It does have one other cool feature - you can use the app to import your friends’ profile photos to your Outlook contacts.
