Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Hey developers!

The Race to the Market Challenge has begun!  The folks over at the Windows Mobile Blog announced that application, game, and widget submissions are now being accepted.   All are encouraged to submit their applications for inclusion in the Windows Mobile Marketplace.

There’s also a bit of a contest going on called the Race to Market Challenge where developers can win one of four Microsoft Surface Tables.

Applications will be judged on:

  • Most downloads of a free app
  • Most valuable app (downloads x price)
  • Most useful (as judged by Microsoft panel)
  • Most playful (as judged by Microsoft panel)

The contest runs from launch until Dec 31, 2009.  Further details are available at http://mobilethisdeveloper.com/

Get developing!

Official Facebook app for Windows Mobile now available

Friday, May 8th, 2009

This has been posted on every gadget site out there already, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to announce it here as well: Microsoft has released the official version of their Facebook application.  Previously, the unofficial version was available on sites such as xda-developers, but now you can get the real McCoy here.

Some key points about the app:

  • It’s currently the only Facebook app available that uploads video straight from your phone.
  • It integrates with Windows Live, allowing you to share photos, updates, etc. with that service.
  • Works with WM 6 and higher only (sorry WM 5 folks).  The app will come baked in to WM 6.5 which comes out later this year.

Enjoy!

Want to access Wikipedia when not connected to the internet? Check out WikiPock!

The Wiki Encyclopedia In Your Mobile Phone

WikiPock is a mobile phone software that allows you to search and read the wiki encyclopedia articles without internet connection. All the articles are stored in your mobile phone’s memory so there is no need to download anything from the network. The world’s biggest encyclopedia with over 2.7 million articles in English — In your phone, on the go!

  • No internet or data connection required
  • Full editorial content
  • Instant search
  • Clean mobile-formatted pages
  • Preloaded microSD memory cards available
  • Always up-to-date
  • Battery-life saver
  • Easy user interface
  • Available in English, German, French, Polish, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish

At first blush, someone who has an unlimited data plan on their device might think an application like WikiPock is unnecessary, but remember, there are still LOTS of people who a.) don’t have unlimited data connections, or b.) find themselves in situations where they have no wireless signal and no availability to WiFi.

$9.99 is not a bad price to have the entire catalog of Wikipedia’s 2.7 million articles at your immediate disposal!  Heck, that’s still not a bad deal even for people with data connections!  To be able to pull up a Wiki on anything you want, almost instantly, would be very cool!  The $9.99 price includes only the latest version of the wiki encyclopedia in all languages (no updates).  There is a $14.99 package which includes the latest version of the wiki encyclopedia in all languages + updates during one year.  This would allow you to keep your encyclopedia updated with the newest articles and corrections via the reserved Downloads section of their website.

You would need a minimum of 4GB of storage available for WikiPock.  There is no trial version, but you can essentially see what the app looks like in the image above.  Otherwise, hey - it’s Wikipedia!  No surprises there!  :)

New Windows Mobile App Portal (currently abroad only)

Friday, July 25th, 2008

There’s a new Silverlight-based portal for Windows Mobile applications designed specifically for customers in the EMEA region – that’s “Europe, Middle East, and Africa.” On this site, you can browse line of business applications  by industry or drill down into apps for sales force enablement, field force enablement, GPS, and more. Each app features a description, a scenario for its usage, and its benefits. You can click to see screenshots and to access more links – like the link to the app’s website, for example. For anyone in this geographic region, the site can be a valuable resource to help you find the best business apps for your Windows Mobile device. To take a look for yourself here.

Wonder what the timing is for this to be available in North America…
