HTC Touch Diamond has multi touch!

 August 20th, 2008    Matt Coddington

Touch Diamond owners will know that the navi-wheel on the front of the device is capacitive, and can measure movement without actually rotating.  Like many HTC devices, it seems the Touch Diamond and Pro have hidden features, and pretty tasty ones indeed.  Using an application called Nav Debug Tool by HTC, this video (link below) shows not only is the navi-wheel capacitive, but that the whole front of the device can track finger movements, and even two fingers independently.

So far there is no known feature on the Touch Diamond/Pro that exploits this, but once the folks at xda-developers get their hands on the API, it won’t be long!

This also promises that even current generation devices with resistive screens will be able to take advantage of multi-touch features in WM7.

Openstream has contributed to some pioneering work at the WorldWideWeb Consortium, and this has led to a new “paradigm of interaction for mobile users that combines voice, touch and key-presses”.

The Cue-me multimodal browser defines the next leap in mobile interaction, and because it’s built on open standards, development will be easy for all the popular phone platforms. You can view a flash demo of the service here or read the full Press Release here.

AOL Revamps AIM Express, Adds IM to Windows Mobile

 August 20th, 2008    Matt Coddington

AOL has added features to its Web-based instant messaging program that bring it more in line with its downloadable counterpart.

AIM Express will now include tabbed IM conversations to avoid having multiple windows open within a single screen. Users will also be able to leave away messages that will be displayed even if they are not online, and view their buddies’ statuses and away messages by rolling their mouse over screen names.

AIM is also now available for Windows Mobile, the company said. Users with smartphones like Motorola Q, Samsung BlackJack and certain Palm Treos can access AIM on-the-go.

“AIM Express raises the bar with its streamlined design and lightweight messaging experience,” David Liu, senior vice president of AOL People Networks, said in a statement. “It’s now even easier for AIM users, especially those on-the-go, to connect with friends whether at home, at a coffee shop, the library, or wherever they have Web access.”

I haven’t used Instant Messaging on my device in ages (SMS has replaced that for me), but if you still use AIM, this is good news.

VITO Technology releases a new version of Winterface

 August 14th, 2008    Matt Coddington

Version 1.1 of Winterface includes numerous improvements. The major one is that they’ve changed the start gesture - now the application is started with the help of the upside-down tick ^.  This gesture is unlikely to interfere with other applications so that Winterface won’t pop out each time you slide the screen.  Drawing the gesture “tick” or letter “v” on your screen can close any application you are working in.

Improvements were also made on Tasks and Calendar.  Winterface now has red indicators with numbers above Calendar and Tasks icons to show active tasks and upcoming events.  When tapping Calendar, you can see a semi-transparent window with all events.  If you need to make any edits, you can go to the Calendar, otherwise you can return back to the screen.  With Tasks, pressing the icon takes you straight to the Tasks to look at them and to edit.

There was great discussion with users who expressed desire to have quick access to separate files, therefore “Files” was added to the menu of the program.  You can now add any file to the screen.

Minor bugs were fixed:

  1. It is now impossible to delete Menu and Running icons of the program
  2. Some of the icons are not doubled any more (like Phone)
  3. The bug on HTC devices with battery icon was also fixed.

Winterface is available here for $19.95.
