TouchFLO 3D vs. Spb Mobile Shell - why I think Spb got it right

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

I was a regular user of Spb Mobile Shell on my previous Windows Mobile devices (Mogul and 6600), but when I upgraded to a Sprint Touch Diamond, it had the built-in TouchFLO 3D user interface, so I stopped using Shell.  That was two months ago.

Over the course of that two months, I’ve spent a lot of time working with and customizing TF3D to my liking, and despite all my efforts, I felt that it was still lacking.  I’ll give an “A” for eye-candy, but I need more than that - I want substance - functionality that provides the information I need, when and where I need it.  That is why I decided to turn off TF3D, install Mobile Shell and see if I would be happier.  Know what? I am!  Read on… (more…)

Microsoft shares test version of IE Mobile 6 with developers

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Microsoft announced a downloadable test version of its “next generation web browser” for Windows Mobile - an “Internet Explorer Mobile 6 Emulator” for developers.

Recently, there have been numerous competitor browsers which have been kicking the butt of the default (weak) Internet Explorer currently found on WM 6.1 devices:  NetFront, Iris Browser, Opera Mobile 9.5, Skyfire, and (soon) Firefox Mobile.

Internet Explorer Mobile 6 is alleged to have some of the following enhancements:

  • Faster operation
  • A zoom-out button that lets users see the overall layout of a web page, then zoom in to a desired portion of it.
  • The ability to view web pages full-screen, without menu bars
  • Adobe Flash support
  • Support for Microsoft Silverlight
  • H.264 video compatibility

We’ll see - eventually!

Fast Touch-Screen Typing Just Got Better: Spb Keyboard 4.0

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Today, Spb Software released Spb Keyboard 4.0.  This has been a long-awaited update to their Full Screen Keyboard which was released several years ago.  It works great with a stylus, but is optimized for typing with your fingers.

Committed to usability and clarity in device navigation, Spb conducted research and gathered feedback from customers, identifying a demand for more flexible mobile text input methods. The new version of Spb’s keyboard now offers three modes of on-screen text input, and has received a new name to portray the change — Spb Keyboard 4.0. The new keyboard benefits from an Spb Mobile Shell-like skin engine, and is optimized for working with both stylus and fingers. Among other things, the new Spb Keyboard offers dozens of languages with the default skin, is more compact in memory consumption, supports smart gestures and ’sliding pop-ups’, which help to make sure the right key is tapped.

What’s New in Spb Keyboard 4.0?

  • Three modes of text input:
Full-Screen, Half-Screen, and Standard modes are optimized for fingers, fingers or stylus, and just the stylus, respectively.
  • New finger-friendly interface and skin engine
The Spb Mobile Shell-like interface is skinnable and will automatically adapt to the current device theme.
  • Built-in support of 35 languages:
Just the default skin supports 35 languages (including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), plus many more possible keyboard layouts.
  • Sliding Pop-ups:
The key pop-ups help to make sure the desired character is tapped, to dramatically decrease the number of misprints.
  • Smart Gestures:
Gestures are available for ALL CAPS, Enter, Spacebar, and Backspace commands.
  • Better Auto-complete:
In full-screen mode, the auto-complete offers a total of 3 word choices from the built-in and user’s dictionaries.
  • Wise Memory Consumption:
For what it does, Spb Keyboard 4.0 consumes less memory and is more compact that earlier versions.

Pricing and Availability
Spb Keyboard is compatible with Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003, Windows Mobile Professional 5.0 and higher; all Windows Mobile screen resolutions are supported. A free, 15-day trial can be downloaded, or Spb Keyboard 4.0 may be purchased for $14.95, or upgraded from 3.х Spb Keyboard versions for just $4.95

Bluehoo beta for Windows Mobile

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

This news came out last week, but we forgot to post about it.  Sounds pretty cool, and it sounds like Azure will be bringing us all sorts of other cool apps in the near future!

Microsoft Azure is a new Microsoft product that let’s you build applications in the cloud or extend your current applications. Check out Bluehoo which is the first non-Microsoft application using this technology.

Quoting from their Web site, Bluehoo is a mobile app that helps you make new social connections with the people around you - for business or for pleasure. Bluehoo uses Bluetooth to discover “hoos” around you right here, right now, shows you those people’s profiles and helps you start conversations. The Bluehoo Beta mobile phone software can be downloaded right now from m.bluehoo.com.

Discuss it here.

Spb Survey: an Insider’s Take on Mobile Software Analytics

Spb Software invites all mobile users to participate in its fifth annual Spb Survey.  The Spb Survey is a mobile software industry report that identifies the changing user profiles, mobile device preferences, and handset use cases.  Spb Software will release a report on the results of its fifth annual Spb Survey in the beginning of December 2008.

Issued by a mobile software usability expert and a recognized brand on the consumer market, Spb Survey reaches out to mobile users directly, bypassing the prism of mobile operators and professional analytical houses.  This year’s survey has a more compact structure, new questions, and is supported by eXpansys, the world’s leading retailer of smartphones and handheld devices with wireless connectivity.  A few lucky, randomly picked Spb Survey participants will receive valuable ‘thank you’ gifts, such as a Windows Mobile device or software by Spb.

BIO.ID. - an identification sensor app for Windows Mobile devices

Monday, November 10th, 2008

No, this is not real, but it’s a neat app to fool your friends!

BIO.ID. functions and features:

  • 3 themes: eye iris scanner, fingerprint scanner, voice reconizing
  • 2 voices: woman, man, to announce messages, or short vibrating without announces
  • “You’ve got message…” repeats after a minute, then every 3 minutes, up to 10 times (to save battery)
  • auto-deleting every message marked as Read in Inbox, or when you open some message to read
  • delays of deleting: 15 seconds, minute, 15 minutes, one hour, or on the next morning
  • modes of deleting: move to Deleted Items folder, or delete completely

Looks like a neat app to have, though the developers would benefit from someone proofreading their site for proper grammar!  :)

There’s a free one-day trial, then it costs $9.95.  Download it here.

How far Windows Mobile devices have come - a blast from the past

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

I was cleaning out some stuff in my desk drawers and happened upon one of my old Compaq Pocket PC’s - a 3900 to be exact.  Pulling the unit out of the drawer, I was shocked at how enormous the thing was in my hand, particularly now that I am a Mogul owner! I remember the device feeling totally normal in my hand back in 2002, but as you can see from these comparison photos,  the Mogul is simply dwarfed by the 3900!

3900mogul1.jpg 3900mogul2.jpg 3900mogul3.jpg

3900mogul4.jpg 3900mogul5.jpg

The devices have certainly come a long way!  So much smaller, and capable of so much more!  What will a Windows Mobile device look like in 2014, 6 more years from now?!!
